The two most well known department stores in Paris are probably Galeries Lafayette and Printemps which situated behind Palais Garnier.
I'm personally not interested in shopping, so the only reason I go to these department stores is for photography.

The view from the terrace isn't bad, but because it's right behind Palais Garnier hence, IMHO, blocks the view of Paris, If I'm to photograph a pano of Paris, I prefer the terrace of  Printemps.
However, the magnificent dome of Galeries Lafeyette is a must-photograph, and so are the different decorations under the dome.

And here's a fun fact about the terrace of Galeries Lafayette that might be interesting to visitors:
On 19th January, 1919 French aviator Jules Vedrines landed his plane on the terrace of Galeries Lafayette and won a 25,000-franc prize provided by the galeries itself, which had been offered before the war. He's also the first pilot to land a plane on the roof of a building in a large city, even though he later received a 16-franc fine for flying over Paris and for landing in a forbidden area, but I'm sure Monsieur Vedrines did not mind.
